SIUE School of Pharmacy Serves Community with Diabetes Education Program
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy (SIUE SOP) continued its commitment to community service by holding a Diabetes Education Program Saturday, Jan. 30, in the Morris University Center. The event drew more than 100 interested individuals seeking more insight into diabetes.
The program included speaker sessions, a vendor fair, diabetes screenings and one-on-one counseling with healthcare professionals.
Chris Lynch, PharmD, professor of pharmacy practice and director of clinical programs in the SIUE SOP, delivered the keynote address on “Personalized Medicine – making it work for you.”
Cindy Hartman, a registered and licensed dietician, certified LEAP therapist and culinary specialist, discussed “Reading Between the Lines of Food Labels.” She also teaches culinary nutrition at St. Louis Community College.
Stacey Thacker, PharmD, an ambulatory clinical pharmacist at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Ind., presented “Diabetes Medication Myth Busters – setting the facts straight.” Thacker previously served as a clinical faculty member for the SIUE SOP where she maintained her practice site at Scott Air Force Base and implemented a diabetes management service.
Christian Inteso, PharmD, discussed “Let’s Get Pumped UP: Diabetes Technology.” She is continuing her training as an ambulatory care resident at SSM Health St. Mary’s.
The event was co-sponsored by Alton Memorial Hospital, Novo Nordisk and SIUE Student Government.
